What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the third molars at the very back of your mouth, usually appearing in the mouth in the late teenage years or early twenties. Sometimes, insufficient space in the back of the mouth may prevent the wisdom teeth from fully erupting (pushing through the gum) leading to pain and other complications.
When Is Removal Needed?
You may require wisdom teeth removal with us if your wisdom teeth are:
- Damaged or decayed
- Becoming loose and moving in their sockets
- Infected (with an abscess), and there is severe pain on biting
- Partially erupted or improperly positioned
- Putting pressure on the neighbouring teeth
- Causing pain or tenderness at the back of your mouth
What Is the Process of Wisdom Teeth Removal?
- 1 Assessment and X-Rays
Your dentist will examine the wisdom teeth and take X-rays, including an OPG if needed, to evaluate their position, angle, and root structure. They'll explain the findings and recommend whether extraction is necessary.
- 2 Treatment Planning
If extraction is recommended, your dentist will outline the procedure, recovery expectations, and costs. Complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon. Sedation options can also be discussed at this stage.
- 3 Extraction
The tooth is removed under local anaesthetic. Simple extractions are straightforward, while impacted teeth may require a small gum incision. The area is cleaned and, if needed, stitched.
- 4 Recovery and Aftercare
You'll receive step-by-step aftercare instructions, including pain management, diet, oral hygiene, and signs to watch for. A follow-up appointment may be scheduled to monitor healing.
