What Are Same-Day Crowns?

Same-day crowns are custom-made tooth restorations crafted using 3D imaging and CAD/CAM technology (computer-aided design/manufacturing) right in the dental clinic. They eliminate the need for temporary crowns and multiple visits.

At My Local Dentists, we use the CEREC system for our same-day crowns. CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic) is a state-of-the-art technology that allows our dentists to create tooth restorations and dental crowns by scanning, designing, milling, staining, glazing, and issuing a crown — all in a single visit.

How the Process Works

1. Examination and Preparation — Your dentist will determine if a CEREC crown is the right treatment for you. If a crown is recommended, your dentist will administer local anaesthetic, prepare the tooth for restoration, and remove any weakened tooth structure or decay.
2. Digital Scan — Your dentist uses a 3D intraoral scanner to capture a digital impression of your tooth — no messy moulds required.
3. Crown Design — Using CAD software, your dentist designs the crown to fit your prepared tooth precisely.
4. Milling — The CEREC machine mills the crown from a ceramic block — usually zirconia or porcelain — using diamond burs for ultimate precision.
5. Placement — Once milling is complete, the crown is checked for fit and bite, polished, and bonded to your tooth — all in the same visit.
