What Is Bruxism or Teeth Grinding?
Bruxism or teeth grinding is unintentional grinding or repeated clenching of the jaw usually performed at night during sleep. Many people suffer from nighttime teeth grinding but are completely unaware of doing so. If left untreated, bruxism can cause significant damage to your teeth and jaw.
You might benefit from a grinding assessment and splint if you experience:
- Chipped or cracked teeth
- Worn down teeth that appear yellow (because of enamel loss)
- Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold
- Irregular bite
- Soreness or tenderness in the jaw
- Headaches
- Jaw pain on opening or closing
- Loose teeth
- Grinding sound at night
The Process
- 1 Assessment
Your dentist evaluates your teeth for signs of grinding, examines your jaw muscles and joints, and reviews your symptoms. X-rays may be taken to identify any hidden damage.
- 2 Impressions
If a night guard or occlusal splint is needed, digital or traditional impressions of your teeth are taken to create a custom-fitted device for maximum comfort and precision.
- 3 Splint Fitting
Your custom splint is carefully fitted and adjusted to ensure comfort and even distribution of biting forces. Your dentist will show you how to wear and maintain it properly.
- 4 Review and Monitoring
Follow-up appointments ensure your splint fits well and your symptoms are improving. Your dentist will continue to monitor your teeth and jaw during regular check-ups.
