Crowns and bridges – Lifelike restorations to restore missing teeth

A dental crown is a tooth jacket or cap that a dentist places over a damaged tooth to improve strength, cosmetic shape and appearance. Dental crowns fitted by My Local Dentists also protect the tooth from damage by oral bacteria or excessive biting forces in the mouth.

We use dental bridges in our clinic to restore one or more missing teeth. A dental bridge comprises an artificial tooth in the centre (called the bridge) and two crowns on either side (called the abutments). The crowns fuse to existing teeth at the two ends of the space.

When dental crowns and bridges are used at our clinic

In dentistry, a single crown is used as a treatment for many scenarios:

  • Restoring extensive decay which cannot be repaired with dental fillings
  • Protecting exposed and brittle teeth (e.g. following a root canal procedure)
  • Fixing fractured or chipped teeth
  • Improving a discoloured smile
  • Capping a dental implant

Dental bridges, on the other hand, are used:

  • To fill gaps created by single or multiple dental extractions
  • To fix an improper bite and thereby solve TMJ problems
  • To equally distribute chewing forces
  • To prevent drifting of existing teeth into a gap
  • To maintain the jaw frame

Dental Crowns – What is the process?

We take a dental X-ray to examine the extent of decay or tooth damage. If the decay is deep and there is a pulp injury, we may need to perform root canal treatment.

Our dentist trims the tooth and shapes it to fit the type of dental crown used. Impressions are then taken of your trimmed teeth and sent to the lab for crown fabrication.

Until you get your permanent crowns fixed, we will protect your teeth with a temporary crown. Patients usually receive their permanent crowns within one to two weeks.

If you opt for dental crowns and bridges from our clinic, we pay close attention to the health of the abutment teeth, as these act as bridge supports.

If you’re looking for long-lasting results for your decayed, damaged, or discoloured teeth, then reach out to us today or walk into any of our clinics for an appointment! My Local Dentists provide high-quality, affordable dental crowns in all our Sydney suburb clinics.

What are dental crowns made from?

Dental crowns are available in several materials. You can have stainless steel, metal (gold and other alloys), all-ceramic, all-resin and porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns. The most commonly used crowns in dentistry are PFM, metal and ceramic crowns.

How can I clean under my dental bridge?

You can clean under your dental bridge using a Waterpik, a floss threader, or an interdental brush. A Waterpik is a specific dental cleaning device that shoots tiny streams of water into the inaccessible areas of the mouth and cleans them effectively.

Can I eat with my temporary crown?

Temporary crowns are fixed to the teeth by a quick bonding agent, which is not very strong. You should refrain from eating sticky or hard foods. Avoid candy, gum, chips, nuts etc., on the side of the mouth where your crown is. Chew from the other side. Also, you should not floss your temporary dental crown.
