What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease or periodontal disease is an advanced stage of gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). When oral hygiene standards are not maintained, plaque and bacteria collect between the tooth and the gums, leading to calculus (tartar) formation. This hard substance is difficult to remove with brushing alone. In addition, calculus contains food debris and bacteria that infect the gums and supporting bone, resulting in gum disease.

The 4-Step Process of Gum Disease Treatment
Before initiating gum disease treatment, our dentist conducts a comprehensive check-up of your gum health. We look for redness, swelling, tenderness, and gum bleeding.
We check for tooth mobility, gum recession, and periodontal pockets. If any pockets are present, we note location and depth. Then, we do superficial teeth cleaning followed by subgingival (deep) cleaning.
After two weeks, we make a follow-up appointment to check the treatment outcome. If required, we do a round of root planing to remove calculus below the gum line.
People with gum recession and loose teeth can get dental flap surgery for their gum disease. Patients can also get periodontal bone graft surgery to pack new bone under the gums.

How long do gum disease treatments take?
We can complete a session of tooth scaling or root planing (deep cleaning) in 30 minutes. But surgical operations like flap surgery and bone graft placement can take anywhere between 2-3 hours.
How long will my gum disease take to heal?
Your gums will heal back to normal in a few weeks if you get your gum disease treated in the early stages (gingivitis). But if you opt for gum disease treatment in the later stages (periodontitis), it can take several months to undo the damage.
How often do my teeth need scaling?
Dental scaling every six months will help you keep up with good oral hygiene standards and protect your teeth from gum disease.
